CSA Cubs Week exposes future prospects

CSA Cubs Week exposes future prospects

Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Franchise Cubs week has done much to reveal the depth of talent in the country, after a successful and promising week in the Boland. The selected 30-man South Africa U19 squad will fall part of an 18-month process ending in 2012, when most of the players will be eligible to play for SA U19.

Seven players from the current SA U19 squad taking part in the ICC U19 World Cup in New Zealand excelled at the inaugural week in 2008, which will strengthen the concentration of youth cricketers moving on from high school to Amateur cricket.

“This group of players will be further assessed and monitored at upcoming regional and national camps during the year. CSA is also in talks and in the process of arranging an overseas tour for this group of players. This week is a vital component of continuity and helping us prepare ” said CSA Youth Cricket Manager, Niels Momberg.

The week, characterised by a swinging white ball and coloured gear, had a balanced blend of the experienced players who took part in the Coca Cola Khaya Majola Week and younger players in the system.

Titans were one of the strongest sides with only one loss, and were led by the explosive batting from Theunis de Bruyn and David Bunn. De Bruyn was the highest run-scorer ending with 237 runs, followed by Bunn (236), who not only excelled with the bat but also had an inspiring week with the ball. Both players scored centuries during the week and were rewarded by the selectors

“The standard of cricket has been good this week, the players showed a high intensity and competitiveness on the field. I hope the players now have the knowledge of what top flight cricket is about and that they will take back what they have learnt this week and plough it back into their cricket when they return to their respective provinces,” remarked Momberg.

One other promising aspect to take out of the week is the number of spinners who stood out during the week. The Warriors trio of Ryan Dugmore, Gionne Koopman and Lionel Vaaltyn took 26 wickets amongst them, an encouraging sign for future spin resources.
