CSA announces U19 stars

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today announced a 15-member South Africa U19 squad ahead of a packed local and international schedule for U19 cricket. The squad, announced at the awards dinner on the final day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 cricket week in Benoni, will play in a Triangular series between India U19 and Sri Lanka U19 starting next week, before heading to the ICC U19 cricket World Cup in New Zealand in January.

“The process of identifying these youngsters started almost 18 months ago, with CSA’s U19 programme which includes the Cubs Week, Regional and National Talent camps, the Coke week and the U19 Series. I am very excited with the squad that we have selected and I am confident that they will do the country proud,” said U19 Convenor of Selectors, Shafiek Abrahams.

The feats of the class of 2008 are impressive and cannot be disregarded, runners-up in the 2008 ICC U19 cricket World Cup in Malaysia as well as victors in the home series against England U19 (3-2 ODI, 2-0 Pro20’s), but the new crop of players bring with them enthusiasm in abundance and raw talent waiting to be unleashed and set alight on the international stage.

Northern’s wicket-keeper batsman, Joshua Richards will captain the squad, which also includes the left-arm orthodox spinner, Dale Deeb, all-rounder Bokang Mosena and the run-machine, Colin Ackerman. Richards’ leadership qualities speak for themselves, he led the SA U19 Invitational XI against England U19 in January and is solid behind the stumps. Ackerman was the leading run-scorer in the CSA U19 Three-Day Competition, where he averaged an incredible 200, with two hundreds to his name.

In keeping along with the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 cricket week tradition, the SA Schools XI and the SA Colts XI to take on Easterns and an Easterns XI on Thursday was also announced. Richards, who captained the SA Colts XI last year will lead the SA Schools XI in their day-night encounter at Willowmoore Park.
